Fred Wooden is senior minister at Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which, though historically Baptist, has been an “independent liberal” church since 1960. Rev. Wooden is among the nine UU clergy who have served it since, along with clergy from the Congregational, Dutch Reformed, and Methodist denominations. He was ordained in 1980, and has served UU churches in Massachusetts, Texas, and New York City before going to Michigan in 2005. Who's Invited to the Party?           Rev. Hardies
This Sunday we celebrate Pentecost, the day long ago when a radically diverse group of believers got together and each spoke in his or her own language, yet was understood by all. Skeptics dismissed that first Pentecost as a drunken celebration. And who knows? I'll bet it was a party of sorts. If so, that ancient party provides a prophetic challenge to a "party"--the so-called Tea Party--that seems to be sweeping across America. What's at stake for us as a people and a nation?
